RomplerBox Beta 2 is Here! Here's What's Improved
Very excited to announce, less than a week after initial launch, that I've made some big improvements on the RomplerBox sample library! The initial version mapped all the samples on non-drumkit plugins to the entire keyboard, and so on a lot of the non piano instruments, you had a few octaves of easily accessible bullshit that sounds bad, but no longer!
I was able to fix this quickly by creating a batch script in python to map each preset to its appropriate range as specified by the generalmidi standard. This incredibly 90s numerical scheme for naming presets wound up being a huge advantage when it comes to this kind of batch processing and has been saving me tons of manual labor.
Unforunately, some of the problems I'm fixing now were also created by batch processing. 0,1,1 had loop points set for pianos, mallet instruments, keyboards, and general shit that shouldn't loop. Most of these are fixed now, though I'm debating whether I want to keep loop points in place for some of the electric pianos. I will jam with them more and make this decision musically rather than trying to be true to what the SC-88 and classic GM samples did. After all, it's not the 90s anymore and my peak concern is this instrument being fun to play. 90s EPs don't sound like real pianos anyways, so I'm not against keeping the quirks of some of these cheap old instruments. As always, leave comments with anything weird you find!
Known Issues:
>Some of the non-looping presets have abrupt stops that make them sound "poppy" at the tail. I've considered a batch-processed solution with ffmpeg to add very quick fadeouts at the end to solve for this, but this could be applied inconsistently across the shorter samples. This will likely be a process that I have to do preset-by-preset in Reaper in future versions and replace the initial files, so this fix may take a little bit longer to have fully fixed. Please leave comments with any preset you run into this problem with in case I miss any in future versions
>Some of the presets that have loop points sound a bit glitchy after they reach said loop points. These samples were originally sourced from a soundfont made in 1997, and many of the sounds themselves are older than that, so I suspect this is because both the duration of the samples and the duration of the loop points are much lower than modern instruments use, giving the looping function less sonic material to work with. The only pattern I've noticed here is that the problem gets worse in the highs, which makes sense because lower sample rates means lower nyquist frequency, which means less high end available. I'm wondering if maybe artifacts are created by DS adding in high end noise after the looped sample. idk, but I'll figure out something workable soon!
I always want to hear about it if you find stuff that's broken or needs improvement!
